Insider sources do say that this 2018 model will continue with the same engine as its previous generation. Thing is, this 998cc engine is one of the most important reasons behind this model’s success in the first place. This 4-stroke power unit comes with Liquid-cooling and Honda’s trademark Unicam setup. But what actually takes it beyond the competition is its innovative design and integration.
As always, Honda concentrates more on power-to-weight ratio and just power. Comparing with the likes of a Ducati Multistrada 1200 or a KTM 1290 Super Adventure, it does have a significantly modest output of 85 hp. Even after considering the meaty low-rpm torque outputs, power is not what this model is all about.
Instead and to repeat, what puts this Honda CRF1000L 2018 above its competitors is sheer driveability. Coming to the power-to-weight ratio, Honda’s focus is to make this generation swifter, more stable and weighing in at just a tad above 230 kg. The weight reduction comes despite Honda continuing with the previous chassis of high-tensile strength steel.
The base transmission option is a 6-Speed Manual. Buyers will also get the DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) Auto tranny option although it will come as a different variant. Another improvement will be in its HSTC to Torque Control System.
